IDENTIFICATION

Lone Pine Publishing has produced a series of guides that include such titles as Forest Plants of Northeastern Ontario and Forest Plants of Central Ontario. The Audubon Society Field Guides, such as North American Wildflowers is well worth looking at.

The Field Guide to Edible Wild Plants by Bradford Angier (Stackpole Books) has excellent illustrations as well as good descriptions.

Don't even think about picking wild mushrooms unless you know what you are doing. But don't rule out these unique foods. Just be careful and first learn more about them by joining your local mycological association. For a good reference with lots of pictures see Mushrooms of North America by Roger Phillips, (Little, Brown). Lone Pine Press publishes a well-illustrated book entitled Mushrooms of Ontario and Eastern Canada by George Barron. If you want to study this world of amazing gourmet treats in depth, pick up the hefty Mushrooms Demystified by David Arora (Ten Speed Press). This 959-page book describes more than two thousand species. Another useful book is The New Savory Wild Mushroom by Margaret McKenny and Daniel E. Stuntz (Greystone Books, Douglas & McIntyre).
